NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Allegheny College baseball team split a pair of shutouts on Friday afternoon against Westminster College, as the Titans won the opener by a 3-0 score, and the Gators rebounded to take the nightcap, 12-0.
The Gators (11-6, 3-1 PAC) outhit the Titans (7-11, 2-2 PAC) in both contests and did not allow an earned run. Despite those results, the Blue and Gold had their six-game win streak snapped in the early game before avenging the loss in the series finale.
Westminster 3, Allegheny 0
The first of two strong pitching performances by the Gators came from the left arm of
Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield). The senior southpaw gave up only three hits and one unearned run in 7.0 innings, but Herrmann did not receive the same offensive support provided by the batters in the second game.Â
The Gators outhit the Titans, 8-to-5, and every batter in the top six spots in the lineup had a hit. However, the bats failed to find a key hit with runners in scoring position. Allegheny left runners on second and third in the top of the fourth. In the sixth,
Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) hit a one-out double but was left on third. Double plays ended both the seventh and ninth innings, and in the eighth,
Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) took a called strike three that left two runners on base.
Allegheny 12, Westminster 0
Given the recent performances against Franciscan University and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, it was only a matter of time before the Gators broke out the lumber. The top five batters in the lineup combined for eight runs scored, 10 hits, including all of Allegheny's extra-base knocks, and 11 RBIs.
Junior first baseman
William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) got things started with a solo home run in the second and then extended Allegheny's lead to 5-0 with a two-run double in the third. The five-run advantage lasted until the seventh, when Jennings cleared the bases with a three-run triple. With the bases reloaded, Wolff earned his fourth RBI of the game with a walk. Jennings picked up his fourth RBI in the eighth with a run-scoring single, swiped second on a double steal that allowed
Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) to reach home, and then scored on the game's final run on a two-out single from
JD Robinson (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove).
Completing all eight innings on the bump was
Mark Schweickert (Richmond, Va./John Randolph Tucker). The right-handed flamethrower fanned nine against only three walks and three hits.Â
