STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Allegheny baseball team won a pair of conference games versus Franciscan University in their first Presidents' Athletic Conference games of the season on Sunday (March 24).
The Gators (9-5, 2-0 PAC) had both sides of the ball working for them, outscoring the Barons (2-9, 0-2 PAC) 27-4 in the series.
Game 1 - Allegheny 8, Franciscan 2
Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) followed up his complete game shutout last weekend with another quality performance today. The southpaw went 7.0 innings, surrendering two runs on six hits, while striking out five.
He rarely found himself in trouble, but when he did he escaped danger or limited the damage en route to his third victory of the season.
The offense got going in the second inning. An RBI triple from
Tommy Landsnes (Richmond, Va./Brunswick Academy) brought home the first run, before he later scored on a wild pitch.
JD Robinson (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) knocked in a two-RBI single in the next inning, but the dagger came in the eighth frame. Up 5-2,
Grant Dowden (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) led off with a walk.
Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) then hit a mammoth shot over the left field wall to split the game open. Later on, Landsnes had his second extra-base hit of the game, knocking in another run with his two-bagger to finalize the scoring.
Preston Pierce (Camano Island, Wash./Stanwood) pitched in the final two innings for Allegheny. After working around an eighth-inning jam, allowing the first two base runners on board before earning the shutout frame, he went one-two-three in the ninth to send the Gators home with the early game win.
Game 2 - Allegheny 19, Franciscan 2 (7 innings)
Rolling the hot bats into the nightcap, Allegheny crushed the Barons' pitching staff, racking up 23 hits, highlighted by a 10-run fourth inning before the game ended early due to a mercy rule.
The Gators stuck first blood with a four-run first inning. Landsnes brought home half the men, scoring a pair on another base hit to right field for his third and fourth RBI of the day.
Another runner scored in the third inning, and in the fourth Allegheny sent 14 men to the plate, gathering 11 hits while putting up double figures in the run column.
Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) Landsnes,
Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wa./Meadowdale) Braynt-Dawson and Robinson all nabbed a RBI.
Four more runs came to score in the seventh inning. Dawson brought home another two runs and
Aidan Bilder (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) tallied his first collegiate base hit, coming via the triple along with an RBI to finalize the scoring.
Mark Schweickert (Glen Allen, Va./John Randolph Tucker) threw for six innings, allowing a pair of Barons to score in the bottom of the fourth. While the right-hander struck out eight, he walked six but only allowed a pair of hits as he picked up his second win.
