Gators Drop Home Contest to Rochester

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's lacrosse dropped a nonconference home contest to Rochester, 18-9, Monday (March 11).

After the Yellow Jackets struck first, Ema Caragein (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton La Salle) answered with a free-position goal to even it up. However, Rochester closed the frame out with five unanswered goals to lead 6-1 after 15 minutes.
 
Lauren Petrarca (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) got the Gators back on the board early in the second, scoring on a wrap around. The Yellow Jackets scored the ensuing two goals before Caragein netted her second free-position goal of the contest. Down the stretch, Rochester outscored the Gators 2-1, with Katherine Surdykowski (Chesterfield, N.Y./Northern Burlington County Regional) providing the Allegheny goal, assisted by Emily Herrold (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley). 
 
In the third, Petrarca scored a pair of goals, the first unassisted and the second assisted by Kendall Cox (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein). Emily Herrold (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) also found the back of the net on an extra player opportunity as each side scored three goals in the period.
 
Petrarca opened up the fourth quarter by scoring her fourth goal of the contest, cutting the Rochester lead to 13-8. Caragein also completed her hat trick on another free-position attempt. However, the Yellow Jackets outpaced the Gators in the quarter as they picked up an 18-8 win.
 
Inside the Box
  • Petrarca led Allegheny with four goals. She also had three draw controls, a caused turnover and a groundball.
  • Caregein netted three goals, all on free-position opportunities while also causing a turnover.
  • Herrold had a goal and an assist with four groundballs and three draw controls.
  • Surdykowski tallied a goal and had three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.
  • Amelia Henderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) led the team with six groundballs and three caused turnovers.
  • Sarah Thorman (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) made 19 saves in goal for the Gators, a career-high.
