MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball battled Saint Vincent throughout their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest Wednesday (Feb. 14), but the Gators were unable to overcome a fourth quarter run as they fell to the Bearcats 69-63 in Meadville.
The Bearcats opened the game on a 6-0 run, but the Gators quickly answered with their own run to tie it up. The teams went back-and-forth the rest of the frame as the Bearcats held a slight 18-13 edge.
A three pointer by
Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) early in the second quarter tied the game at 22 apiece. The game continued to be evenly matched down the stretch as Saint Vincent took a 30-28 lead into the locker room.
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) led the Gators with 10 points in the opening half. Bickart had five points while
Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) had nine rebounds. The Gators shot 41.9% (13-of-31) from the field in the half and owned a 19-12 advantage in rebounds.
The teams continued to trade leads in the third quarter. The Gators hit a surge in the final minutes, ending the frame on a 6-1 run to take a 48-45 lead into the final quarter.
The Bearcats started the fourth quarter on a 14-6 run, taking a 59-54 lead midway through. The Gators chipped away at the lead, bringing the score to 63-60 with just under two minutes to play.
Saint Vincent scored the next four points to move ahead by seven points. Bickart hit a three with 30 seconds remaining, but the Bearcats held off the Gators the rest of the way to seal the victory.
