Gators Fall in Battle at Division I Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team traveled to Division I Mercyhurst for an exhibition game Monday evening (Dec. 30) in Erie, falling to the Lakers in a 71-52 battle.
 
The Lakers started the game on a 12-3 run. The Gators fought back and answered with their own run, 11-5. Ava Kobus (Pittsburgh, Pa./Norwin) had four points in that run while Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) hit the three that started it. That run cut the Mercyhurst lead to 17-14 after the first quarter.
 
The two teams traded baskets over the first five minutes of the second quarter as the deficit stayed at three points. The Lakers went on an 8-2 run to move ahead, 31-22, but the Gators finished the half on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 33-27 at the half.
 
Kobus led the Gators with nine points in the opening half while Bella Antonacci (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) had eight with six rebounds. The Gators shot 37.0% from the floor (10-of-27).
 
After some back-and-forth action to start the third quarter, the Lakers went on a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 43-32. Allegheny would answer minutes later with a 6-0 run of their own. Mercyhurst scored the final basket of the frame as they led 47-39 heading into the final 10 minutes.
 
The Gators kept it close early in the fourth, cutting the lead down to seven points. However, over the final four minutes, the Lakers went on a 12-2 run as they pulled away late from Allegheny.
 
Inside the Box
  • Antonacci led Allegheny with 15 points to go with six rebounds and three steals.
  • Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) finished with nine points, six rebounds and three blocks.
  • Kobus also had nine points with a block.
  • Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) had eight points, five rebounds and two steals.
  • Bickart ended the contest with six rebounds and four points.
  • The Gators shot 37.3% (19-of-51) from the floor.

  • The Gators' record remains at 6-4 overall.
  • This marked the final nonconference game for the Gators on their schedule.
