Gators Defeat Chatham 5-0, Advance to PAC Semifinals

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny men's soccer team took an early lead and never looked back as they defeated Chatham 5-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Quarterfinals at home Saturday (Nov. 2).

Senior Brady Napoleon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) tallied two goals in the game for his 17th and 18th goals of the season, breaking the previous program record of 17 set in 1977 by Allegheny Hall of Famer David Nelson.

The Gators did not need much time to get on the board. In the fourth minute, Napoleon worked past the Chatham defenders and scored on a low, driving shot inside the near post to give Allegheny an early lead. The goal was Napoleon's 17th of the season, tying the program record for most in a season.

Allegheny doubled their lead in the 29th minute. Cliff Weaver (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) worked the ball across the front of the box, passing over to Will Gruca (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) in a crowd. Gruca emerged with the ball and got a quick shot off to the low corner, past the goalkeeper for the goal. Gruca's goal was his fifth of the year.

In the 43rd minute, Renen Frank (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) drew a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Napoleon took the opportunity and buried the shot to increase the lead to 3-0. That goal, his 18th of the year, broke the Gator program record for season goals.

The Gators added to their lead in the 60th minute. Colin Elder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) crossed the ball in front to Weaver. Weaver's one-touch made its way to the back of the net as the Gators' lead grew to 4-0. The goal was Weaver's fourth of the year.

Allegheny capped off the win with a goal in the 83rd minute. On a free-kick from 30 yards out, Andrea Boccia (Lauria, Italy/Liceo Classico Q.O. Flacco) struck the ball to the bottom corner past the outstretched arms of the goalie for the final goal. The strike by Boccia was the first goal of his career.
