Gators Fall in Close Battle to Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny field hockey team battled Kenyon Saturday (Oct. 26) in a back-and-forth North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) road contest, ultimately falling to the Owls 3-2.

The Owls scored about three minutes in off of a penalty corner to take an early lead.

Allegheny tied the game a little later in the quarter. After the Gators created a turnover in the Kenyon end of the field, Bella Cowen (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day School) struck a ball to the net. Emily Robles (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township) was in front of the net to deflect the attempt in, tying the game at one. The goal marked the first of the season for Robles.

Kenyon regained the lead midway through the second quarter, once again on a penalty corner. Rowan O'Toole (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made the initial save, but the Owls were able to follow-up for the go-ahead goal.

Just like in the first quarter, the Gators were quick to answer. On their own penalty corner, Jenna Cassani (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) inserted the pass and eventually the ball worked back to her. She sent it across the front of the goal to Cowen, who put it in the back of the net, tying the game. The goal was her second of the year.

The back-and-forth first half continued as the Owls scored in the final two minutes to take a 3-2 lead at the break.

Robles nearly tied the game in the third, but her shot ricocheted off the post.

The Gators outshot the Owls 7-6 in the second half, with a pair of shots on target by Robles and additional ones by Caroline Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty), Maddy Keenan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Trafford) and Cowen. However, Allegheny was unable to find the tying goal as they dropped the back-and-forth conference contest 3-2.
