MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's soccer team scored a pair of second half goals to overcome a halftime deficit, defeating Franciscan 2-1 Wednesday evening (Oct. 23) in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play.
The win clinched a spot for the Gators in the PAC Championships.
The Gators controlled the pace of the opening half, outshooting the Barons 13-1 in the opening 30 minutes. However, it was Franciscan that scored first. In the 31st minute, a shot from just outside the box on the far side found its way inside the near post for the score.
Allegheny nearly found the equalizer on a corner kick in the 35th minute, but a header by
Katherine Surdykowski (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington County Regional) was stopped on the line by a Baron defender.
In the 49th minute, the Gators found the equalizer. Following a corner kick, the Gators earned a penalty kick.
Emma Miller (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) stepped up for the attempt, and buried the shot in the top left corner of the goalie to tie the game. The goal marked her 18th of the season.
The Gators needed just six more minutes to score the go-ahead goal. A shot from Miller hit the bottom of the crossbar before
Olivia Wilson (Mars, Pa./Mars) crashed the net and put the ball in the back. The goal was Wilson's second of the year.
Each side had chances the rest of the way, but Wilson's strike proved to be the game winner as the Gators collected a key PAC win.
