CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Allegheny volleyball team began competition at this weekend's Case Western Reserve Quad Friday night (Sept. 8), defeating Defiance in straight sets.
The Gators won the sets 25-14, 25-15, 25-16.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set, but the Gators battled back. After tying the set at seven, Allegheny won five straight points, leading to a Defiance timeout. The run grew to 9-0 before the Yellow Jackets broke it up. Leading 24-14,
Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) ended the set with an ace.
Similar to the opening set, the Gators utilized a big, mid-set run to gain control as they went on a 10-1 run to take a 22-11 lead. The set ended on a Yellow Jacket service error as the Gators took a 2-0 set lead.
Allegheny jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set. That lead would grow to as much as 13 as the Gators clinched the win on a
Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School) kill.
Inside the Box
- Angelee Bawek (Goodyear, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) led the team with a season-high 16 kills. Bawek also had a team-high nine kills.
- Sydney Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) and Javes had seven kills apiece while Emma Chambers (Stoutsville, Ohio/Amanda Clearcreek) had six.
- Izzy Gray (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) had a career-high 30 assists.
- Diaz had three aces to go with eight digs.
- Alejandra Fernandez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Commonwealth Parkville) also had eight digs.
- Javes added 2.5 total blocks.
- The Gators hit .307 for the match.
