Second Half Surge Propels Gators Past Pioneers

MEADVILLE, Pa. – A four goal second half lifted the Allegheny women's soccer team past Alfred State, 4-1, Wednesday (Sept. 6) in Meadville.

Alfred State got on the board in the opening minutes, scoring on a close-ranged shot. Julieta Schworm (Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) had a chance at an equalizer a minute later, but her attempt was turned away. Emma Milligan (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorra), Emma Miller (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) and Katherine Surdykowski (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington County Regional) also had quality opportunities turned away in the opening half as they trailed 1-0 at halftime.

The Gators' attack finally broke through in the 60th minute. After earning a free kick just outside the goalie box, Miller tucked the shot under the crossbar, tying the game at one apiece. Allegheny needed just four more minutes to take the lead. This time, Schworm dribbled down past the defenders, scoring from about seven yards out, putting the Gators in front, 2-1.

In the 70th minute, Casey Bender (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) extended the lead. Bender received a cross from Schworm, touched around the goalie and scored. The lead became 4-1 in the 81st minute. After a long throw in, Karley Johnson (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community) passed the ball over to Taylor McKindley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic). McKindley lofted a shot from near the corner, floating it in over the goalkeeper for the Gators' fourth goal of the half.

Allegheny held the Pioneers at bay the final 10 minutes as they collected the victory.
