Women's Tennis Blanks Division II Clarion

CLARION, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's tennis team, playing for the third consecutive day, continued to roll with a 7-0 victory on the road against PennWest Clarion on Wednesday afternoon.

Playing by Division II scoring rules, the Gators (5-1) benefited from Clarion's (1-3) shorthanded lineup. The Golden Eagles were forced to forfeit the third doubles and sixth singles matches, which cost Clarion the doubles point and one singles point.

In addition to the forfeit at No. 3 doubles, Allegheny was victorious at the No. 2 spot. Emiliia Grydnieva (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Rei Etsumi (Honolulu, Hawaii/President William McKinley) blanked Clarion's team of Josie Beckerleg and Alyson Fisher, 6-0.

Grydnieva, the reigning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Week, then battled Alexis Strouse in the closest singles match of the day. She defeated Strouse in the opening set, 7-5, but had to win an 11-9 tiebreak after dropping the second set. With the win, Grydnieva handed Strouse her first singles defeat of the fall.
