Baseball Falls Out of Postseason Contention With Losses at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Allegheny College baseball team was eliminated from the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoff contention after dropping the final two games of the regular season to Washington and Jefferson College on the road on Saturday afternoon in Washington, Pennsylvania.

The Gators (20-16, 13-7 PAC) fell to the Presidents (28-12, 17-3 PAC) 9-5 in the first game and 10-1 in the nightcap.

Coupled with a pair of wins by Saint Vincent College on Saturday, the losses dropped Allegheny into a three-way tie with the Bearcats and Westminster College with 13 conference wins. As a result of the tiebreaker, the Gators officially finished fifth in the standings, narrowly missing out on a postseason berth.

W&J 9, Allegheny 5
Allegheny struck first in the top of the third inning after Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) had an everyday single turn into an inside-the-park home run. The Presidents' right fielder made a diving attempt on a sinking line drive, but it went past his glove and rolled all the way to the fence, allowing the Gators to score three to take an early advantage.

It was short-lived, though, as W&J came right back in the home half of the frame. After an errant throw allowed one run to score, Evan Sante hit a two-run blast to tie the game at 3-3.

Washington and Jefferson added two more in the fifth to take their first lead of the series and never looked back. They piled on four in the eighth inning to make it a 9-3 contest.

The Allegheny bats fell quiet after their three-run third, and did not find the scoreboard again until the ninth inning. Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) each had hits and tallied an RBI in the ninth, but the comeback was too little, too late.

Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) picked up his only loss of the season in game one. The southpaw went 4.2 innings, giving up five runs (one earned) on seven hits.

W&J 10, Allegheny 1
The Presidents led from start to finish in the second game. After scoring on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first inning, they then scored three more in the second, one in the fourth, and three in the fifth to make it an 8-0 ballgame.

The only highlight from the offense came in the seventh inning, when Chodkowski hit a line-drive home run over the right-field wall in his final collegiate game. The Gators were limited to five hits from the plethora of arms thrown by the Presidents.

Mark Schweickert (Greg Allen, Va./John Randolph Tucker) picked up the loss after just 2.0 innings and giving up four runs. Despite the off day from Schweickert, he was still a top arm in the starting rotation, finishing the season with the lowest ERA in the starting rotation at 3.43.

A Farewell to the Seniors
After a four-year ride with the Gators, Allegheny College would like to thank the nine seniors graduating this semester, as their hard work on and off the diamond has been noticed by many. There is a lot to be proud of over the past four seasons, and we wish the Class of 2023 success in the future.
