WEXFORD, Pa. -- The top-seeded Allegheny College men's tennis team took down No. 2 Grove City College on Saturday evening by a 5-1 final score to capture the 2023 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championship on the indoor courts at the Oxford Athletic Club.
The title is the fourth in program history and Allegheny's first in 41 years. Before the Gators departed the PAC for the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), they won three consecutive PAC championships from 1980-82.
With Saturday's victory, the Gators (17-4) have secured the conference's automatic bid into the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships. The NCAA will announce regional information on Monday, May 1.
Like the regular-season meeting between the Gators and Wolverines (13-6), Allegheny opened the match by taking two of three doubles matches. With a 2-1 entering the singles portion of the day, the Gators needed three singles matches to clinch the championship, and did so with three consecutive straight-set wins.
Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) was the first off the court with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 1 over Ryne Talko. Senior
Adam Shinomiya (Portland, Ore./International School of Beaverton) extended Allegheny's lead to 4-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position.
Will Jarvie (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) concluded the match by taking his bout at No. 5 by a 6-2, 6-1 final score.Â
