Softball sweeps on opening day

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Allegheny softball team opened their 2023 season with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday (March 4) in Florida.

The Gators won on a walk-off against Gordon, 10-9, in game one before dispatching Sage Russell 8-6 in the nightcap.

Game 1 - Allegheny 10, Gordon 9

Gordon took an early lead after plating four runs in the first inning. The Gators made up ground in the bottom of the frame. After Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) earned a walk, Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) crushed the next pitch over the left center fence, cutting the lead in half.

In the bottom of the second, Halle Book (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) reached on an error and scored on a fielder's choice hit by Horensky, making it a one run game.

The score stayed that way until the top of the fifth, where the Fighting Scots put up a pair of runs to increase their lead to 6-3. In the bottom of the frame, Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) belted the Gators second home run of the game, this time to right center, narrowing the gap. Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) and Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) followed up with back-to-back singles. The Gators took advantage of a miscue later in the inning as Godzak crossed the plate to drop the Gordon lead to one. However, the Fighting Scots tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 9-5.

In the bottom of the sixth with Long and Genareo aboard, Godzak doubled to right center, bringing both runners around to cut the lead to two.

After keeping Gordon at bay in the top of the seventh, Maley Gleason (Houston, Texas/Westside) earned a walk to lead off the bottom of the frame. Book singled up the middle to put two runners on the base paths. After a long at-bat, Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) was walked, loading the bases for Long. Long doubled down the left field line, driving home two runs to tie the game at nine.

Horensky provided the heroics for the Gators as she slid in under the tag on a wild pitch, completing the comeback and giving the Gators a season opening win.

Game 2 - Allegheny 8, Sage Russell 6

After two scoreless innings, the Gators cracked the scoreboard in the top of the third in a big way. Eva Dillaman (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) and Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) singled. Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) drove Dillaman home on a fielder's choice before Phillips was able to score on a miscue a batter later, making it 2-0. Horensky then cleared the bases with a single, making it 4-0. After a Genareo single, a Godzak single brought Horensky home. Anna Castlevetere (Clarence, N.Y./Nardin Academy) finished the scoring for the inning, bringing Genareo across on a sac fly, making it 6-0.

In the top of the fifth, Castlevetere drove Genareo home with a single through the left side, increasing the lead to 7-0.

Russell Sage cut into the lead in the fifth and sixth innings, bringing three runs across the plate in the fifth and one in the sixth.
