Schweickert Fans Nine in Baseball's Non-Conference Win vs. Penn State Behrend

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College baseball team returned to the win column on Thursday, as the Gators defeated visiting Penn State Behrend, 7-3, on a sunny afternoon on Robert M. Garbark Field at the Robertson Athletic Complex.

Allegheny (7-10), which has received several quality performances from its starting pitching over the past week, got another from from second-year hurler Mark Schweickert (Glen Allen, Va./John Randolph Tucker) against the Lions (5-8). In the longest outing of his career, the hard-throwing righty logged career highs in innings pitched (6.2) and strikeouts (9), while allowing only one unearned run. Schweickert did walk four and surrendered seven hits, but was able to dance out of trouble to earn his first collegiate win on 109 total pitches.

The Gators tallied runs in the first, second, and sixth innings, and carried a 3-1 lead into the seventh-inning stretch. In the bottom of the seventh, however, Allegheny put a crooked number on the scoreboard and took a comfortable 7-1 advantage. With two runners in scoring position, Antonio Rios (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) poked a soft liner over the shortstop's head and into shallow left center, which allowed Brenden Gray (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Park) to trot home from third. Following an RBI ground out from Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) doubled home a run and Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) added a sac fly to give Allegheny its largest lead of the afternoon.

Daniel Morgano (Allison Park, Pa./Vincentian Academy), the second reliever head coach Brandon Crum called from the bullpen, shut down Penn State Behrend's two-run rally in the top of the eighth and closed the door with 2.0 scoreless innings.
