BECKLEY, W. Va. – The Allegheny baseball team's ninth inning rally fell just short as the Gators fell in their season opener against John Carroll, 11-10, in a neutral site contest held in Beckley, W. Va.
The Gators trailed 11-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth. The team rallied for four runs on five hits but came up one run short.
The Blue Streaks got on the board in the top of the first. Taking advantage of a walk, a double produced the first run of the game. However, the Gators were quick to respond as they also took advantage of a free base.
Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) was walked in the lead-off spot. After taking second on a wild pitch and moving up to third on a groundout,
Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) brought him home on a RBI single.
The score remained knotted at one until the top of the fifth when John Carroll scored three runs on four hits and an error.
The lead grew to 5-1 in the top of the seventh before the Gators got on the board again in the bottom of the frame.
Anthony Maslo (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After moving to second on a balk,
Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) brought Maslo around on a RBI single, cutting the lead to 7-2.
The Blue Streaks put up four runs in the eighth but the Gators matched it in the bottom of the inning. With
Grant Dowden ( (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) and
Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) aboard,
Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) drove both home with a pinch hit triple. Schueltz then scored on a fielding error before Chodkowsi hit his second RBI, bringing Dougherty home to make it 11-6.
After keeping John Carroll off the board in the ninth, the Gator offense got back to work. With two outs,
Seth Reisman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayettville-Manilus) and
Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) hit back-to-back singles. Schueltz followed up with a double to drive home Cartwright. Following a walk to Dougherty, Chodkowsi came through again with a two RBI single, cutting the lead to 11-9.
