Gators fall to Cougars in PAC quarterfinals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team fell in the quarterfinals of their first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships to Chatham on the road, 74-56, Monday (Feb. 20).
 
The Cougars got out to a fast start as they outpaced the Gators 20-8 over the opening eight minutes of play. The Gators would end the frame on a 7-3 run with Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) tallying five of those points. 
 
Late in the second quarter, the Gators would pull within seven, 35-28, as they rattled off a 7-0 run, capped by an Alexis Caldwell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) three. However, Chatham answered with their own 7-0 run to own a 42-28 halftime lead.
 
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) led the Gators with ten points in the opening half while also securing four rebounds. Genareo had seven points and a team-high six rebounds while Caldwell also tallied seven points.
 
The Gators made up some ground in the third quarter. They outscored the Cougars 16-12 in the frame. Caldwell and Lauer each scored five in the frame while Lauer was responsible for four points.
 
Chatham pulled away in the fourth quarter. Starting the final ten minutes on a 11-2 run, the Cougars led by as much as 19 as they moved into the PAC semifinals.
 
Inside the Box
  • Lauer led the Gators with 16 points and six steals. She also collected seven rebounds.
  • Genareo put together a double-double, scoring 14 points while collecting 11 rebounds.
  • Caldwell also ended the game with 14 points and seven rebounds.
  • Kate Leach (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) had eight points with seven rebounds.
  • Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) tied Genareo for the team-high in rebounds with 11 while grabbing six rebounds.
  • The Gators outrebounded their counterparts 48-38, and scored 17 second chance points.
News and Notes
  • The Gators first season in the PAC ends with a 13-13 overall record. They went 12-8 in the PAC during the regular season.
  • Lauer's 479 points this season and 193 field goals made are both fourth most all-time for a Gator in a single season. Her free-throw percentage of 81.3% ranks seventh best for a season.
