Women’s Basketball Opens Season at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team opened their 2023-24 campaign on the road at Carnegie Mellon Wednesday (Nov. 8).
 
The Gators fell to the Tartans 80-43.
 
Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored the first points of the season for the Gators, draining a three ball to put the Gators in front 3-2 early on. However, the Tartans would build up a lead in the first quarter that saw them ahead 25-12 heading into the second. 
 
Carnegie Mellon would continue to improve their lead in the second frame, taking a 45-20 lead into the locker room.
 
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) led the Gators with nine first half points. Bickart added six while Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) had five.
 
The Gators gained some ground in the third quarter, outpacing the Tartans 17-13. However, the Tartans limited the Gators in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
 
Inside the Box
  • Lauer led the Gators with 13 points while also collecting a pair of steals.
  • Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) recorded a double-double, finishing with 12 rebounds and 11 points. She also blocked a pair of shots.
  • Bickart ended the game with eight points, three steals, three assists and three rebounds.
  • Genareo had seven points with three rebounds.
  • Branygan Bianchin (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) tied the team-high with three assists while scoring two points.
  • Jasmyn Fisher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) also had a pair of points. 
  • The Gators scored 10 points off turnovers.
News and Notes
  • The Gators are now 7-19 all-time against Carnegie Mellon.
  • First-year Analyse Rios (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek) made her Gator debut, playing 18 minutes.

The Gators will take part in the Chuck Resler Tournament at the University Rochester Friday and Saturday (Nov. 10-11), playing the host Friday at 8 pm.
