HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Allegheny men's basketball team fell in the consolation game of the Hawks Against Hunger Tip-Off Tournament to host Hilbert, 77-63, Saturday (Nov. 11).
The Hawks got out of the gate fast, scoring the game's first 10 points. The Gators would chip away at the lead throughout the half. Trailing 27-17, the Gators rattled off an 8-1 run to cut the lead to four with five minutes remaining in the half. However, Hilbert finished the frame on a 12-4 run to lead 40-28 at the half.
James Sitter (Erie, Pa./Fairview) led the Gators with seven points in the opening half. In total, seven different Gators scored in the opening 20 minutes.
The halftime adjustments paid off for the Gators as they started the second half on a 7-0 run, cutting the lead to 40-35. After a Hilbert timeout, the run continued for the Gators as they gained the lead, 44-43, on a Sitter lay-up. The Hawks would answer the Gators with a 8-0 run to re-establish their lead. Allegheny answered the call once more with a 9-2 run as the teams continued to trade the lead back-and-forth.
The game remained close until the final five minutes when the Hawks closed the game out on a 13-2 win to seal the victory.
Inside the Box
- Andre Wilder (Beaver Falls, Pa./Lincoln Park) led the Gators with 14 points alongside six rebounds and three blocks.
- Ryan Lang (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) was also in double-digits with 10 points. He led the team with seven rebounds.
- Luke Barker (New Castle, Pa./Struthers (Ohio)) finished with nine points and three assists.
- Sitter also finished with nine points.
- Isaiah Portis (Medina, Ohio/Norwayne) and Preston Turk (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) had seven points apiece while Mike Noonan (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) had six.
- The Gators shot 40.4% from the floor and were 11-of-12 on free-throws (91.7%).
News and Notes
- The Gators are now 1-1 all-time against Hilbert.
- Lang was named to the All-Tournament Team. In the two games this weekend, Lang totaled 33 points, 19 rebounds and seven assists.
