Offense shines in 89-62 win at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Allegheny men's basketball team hit a season-high 17 three-pointers as the Gators defeated Waynesburg 89-62 on the road in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Saturday (Jan. 14).
 
The Gators got out of the gate fast, accumulating a 13-4 lead before a Waynesburg timeout less than four minutes in. During the initial run, Preston Turk (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) hit a pair of three-pointers while Andre Wilder (Beaver Falls, Pa./Lincoln Park) also had one. Following the timeout, the Gators' run grew to 21-4 with a three-pointer by Isaiah Portis (Medina, Ohio/Norwayne) as well as Turk's third triple. Late in the half, Turk's fifth three-pointer gave the Gators their largest lead at 26 points, 47-21, as the Gators took a 51-25 lead into halftime.
 
Turk and Portis both tallied 15 points in the opening half. Wilder chipped in eight more while Caden Hinckley (Boise, Idaho/Mount Lebanon (Pa.)) added seven. Overall, the Gators shot 59.4% (19-of-32) while draining 11-of-21 three-pointers (52.4%). Allegheny also had a 21-16 rebounding edge in the half.
 
Allegheny continued to shoot well from range as they drained five more three-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the second half. A 7-2 run at the midway mark of the half, capped off by a Luke Barker (New Castle, Pa./Struthers (Ohio)) three, gave the Gators their largest lead of the game, 82-52. The Gators continued to control the pace of the game the rest of the way as they collected the conference victory.
 
Inside the Box
  • Portis led the Gators with a season-high 24 points, going eight-of-13 (61.5%) from the floor, including five-of-nine (55.6%) from range. He also grabbed four rebounds and assisted on four baskets.
  • Turk had a career-high 20 points. He went seven-of-nine (77.8%) from the floor, with six three-pointers. Turk also had four rebounds and two assists.
  • Hinckley put together his 10th double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Ryan Lang (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) was the fourth Gator in double-digits as he netted 11 points with four rebounds and a pair of assists.
  • Wilder had nine rebounds and eight points while Barker finished with seven points and a team-high six assists.
  • The Gators shot 46.5% overall (33-of-71) and 17-of-40 (42.5%) from three-point range.
  • Allegheny owned a 47-37 rebound advantage. 
News and Notes
  • The 40 attempted three-point field goals by the Gators is a team record.
  • Hinckley passed Garrett Daggett for fifth on the all-time rebounding list during the game. He currently sits at 671 career rebounds.
  • The Gators improve to 10-6 overall and 8-3 in PAC play.
  • Allegheny is now 10-3 all-time against Waynesburg.
