Men's Soccer Drops Home Opener Against CMU

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The visiting Tartans from Carnegie Mellon University bested the Allegheny College men's soccer team, 6-0, in their 2022 home opener at the Robertson Athletic Complex on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Although light rainfall may be more appropriate for an alligator than a Scottish terrier, the Tartans (2-0-0) maintain the upper hand throughout the non-conference matchup against the Gators (0-2-0). CMU held a 27-to-9 advantage in shots and a 13-to-2 lead in shots on goal; however, Allegheny wasn't without any quality chances.

In the 10th minute, Cliff Weaver (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) took a lofted pass up the left side and fired a shot from just outside the six-yard box, but it landed right in the belly of Carnegie Mellon keeper Liam Ryan. Approximately two minutes later, the Tartans countered down the field, and Ethan Vertal struck for the first of his two first-half scores.

A similar situation occurred in the 33rd minute. Henry Rosenberg (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice) ripped a shot towards the lower left corner of the goal, but Ryan made a diving stop before a defender cleared the ball out of the 18. A follow-up attempt from Gunnar Brettell (Steubenville, Ohio/Indian Creek) moments later sailed high, and less than two minutes later, CMU doubled their lead to 2-0 on Vertal's second goal.

Trailing only 2-0 in the 55th minute, Brady Napoleon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) moved up the formation from his usual spot on the back line. Napoleon advanced the ball down the left wing to set up an excellent scoring chance with three Gators inside the box. Unfortunately, his pass rolled untouched through traffic before being collected by the Carnegie Mellon defense.

From there, the Tartans padded their lead with four unanswered in the second half.

Inside the Box
  • Allegheny recorded nine shots, with two landing on goal.
  • Carnegie Mellon, however, amassed 27 total shots in the game.
  • Corner kicks were much closer, only a 7-to-4 advantage in favor of the Tartans.
  • Allegheny goalkeeper Gabe Anthony (Tarentum, Pa./Highlands) made seven saves while playing all 90 minutes.
  • Brettell led all Gators with three shots, while Rosenberg and Weaver each took two.

News and Notes
  • One of Allegheny's oldest foes, Sunday's tilt was the 42nd all-time meeting between the Gators and Tartans since 1937.
  • Through two starts as a junior, Anthony has already made a career-high 15 saves in goal; he made 10 stops in five appearances in 2021.
  • First-year forward Jacob Kubik-Pauw (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) made his collegiate debut off the bench against CMU.
