Gators rally back in game two for DH split at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – Allegheny rebounded from a game-one defeat to earn a split at Wooster in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) baseball doubleheader in Ohio.

The Fighting Scots won game one 15-1 in seven innings, but the Gators rallied back for an 11-5 wimn in the nightcap.

Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) hit a solo home run for the Gators' lone run in game one. Ben Kosbie (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy), Jake Stotsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) and Brayden Cartwright (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) also tallied hits in the game.

The Gators started game two with a run in the first. Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) reached on an error and was driven home by Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny).

After the Fighting Scots tied the game in the third, the Gators made up the run in the fourth. Bryant-Dawson singled to lead-off the inning. William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) doubled later in the inning, bringing Bryant-Dawson home and giving the Gators the lead once again.

In the sixth, Dougherty blasted his second solo home run of the day, extending the lead to 3-1. The lead grew to 4-1 in the inning as Cartwright hit an RBI single to score Heckert.

The seventh inning saw another pair of Gator runs. Bryant-Dawson and Dougherty both singled before Wolff brought the pair home with a base knock to center field.

After Wooster added three runs in the bottom of the seventh, Stotsky led off with a double before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Budnar (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights). Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) walked to put runners on the corners, before Kosbie drove in Stotsky with a single to center. Bryant-Dawson's third hit of the game brought Chodkowski around to make it 8-4. Following a pitching change, Dougherty brought home one run with a double to center and Heckert added another with a sacrifice fly to stretch the score to 10-4.

The Gators capped their run production on the day on a Budnar sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth which brought home Cartwright who led off the frame with a double.

Dougherty went 4-for-5 with a pair of extra-base hits in the win. Stotsky went 3-for-3, while Bryant-Dawson was 3-for-5 and Cartwright, Heckert and Wolff each posted a pair of hits.

Bobby Kusinsky (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) worked 3.1 innings of relief after entering in the second inning to earn the win and improve to 7-1 on the year. He surrendered just two hits and an unearned run, while striking out two and walking a pair on 43 pitches. Nolan Thompson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and Hunter Lohr (Bowdoinham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) split the final four innings 2.0 apiece to help Allegheny hold on for the NCAC split.

Next up on the schedule for the Gators is a nonconference home game against Fredonia at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.
