Eight-run sixth secures Baseball win at Thiel, 11-1

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny baseball team traveled down I-79 to face Thiel in a nonconference game Tuesday (April 12).

\An eight-run outburst in the sixth inning helped the Gators secure an 11-1 win.

Bobby Kusinsky (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) improved to 6-0 on the year as he did not allow a hit in five innings of work while striking out five.

The Gators struck first in the top of the fourth. Brayden Cartwright (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) singled through the left side and eventually came around on an error. However, Thiel matched the Gator run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 1-1.

A pair of runs came across the plate for Allegheny in the fifth as it regained the lead. Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) brought Jacob Budnar (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) home on a sacrifice fly before Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) knocked in Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) with an RBI ground out.

Alejandro Samayoa (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay Cross River) and Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) hit back-to-back singles to lead off the sixth inning. After William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) was walked, Budnar plated Samayoa home with a sac fly. Bryant-Dawson followed up with a two RBI double to make it 6-1. Bryant-Dawson would score on an error following a stolen base. Ben Kosbie (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) doubled to score Heckert while Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) singled to drive in Kosbie. Samayoa then launched his first career home run – a two-run shot – to extend the lead to 11-1.

Bryant-Dawson led the Gators with three RBI on two hits while stealing a pair of bases. Samayoa had two hits and two RBI while Chodkowski and Dougherty also had multi-hit days. Heckert was walked three times and stole three bases.

The Gators will return to North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, April 16.
