PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Allegheny baseball team swept a road doubleheader at La Roche Friday (March 25).
The Gators outslugged the Redhawks 25-7, including a 17-0 shutout in game two.
Â
Conor Deasy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) picked up the game one win while
Daniel Morgano (Allison Park, Pa./Vincentian Academy) pitched the complete game two shutout.
Â
Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) tallied six hits on the day, including four in game two.
Jacob Budnar (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) had four hits in game two as well.
Allegheny opened up game one with a 7-1 lead through three innings, including four runs in the third highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of
Brayden Cartwright (New Castle, Pa./New Castle). After three combined runs between the fourth and fifth innings, the Redhawks cut the margin to 7-4, but
Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh for the insurance run which proved necessary.
Deasy struck out eight in 5.2 innings, yielding six hits and four runs.
Joseph Raleigh (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) picked up his second save by striking out the final batter of the game, and the only he faced, on three pitches.
The Gators jumped on La Roche quickly in game two, so quickly in fact that
Anthony Maslo (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) led off the contest with his first career home run. Aside from the fifth inning, Allegheny plated at least one run in each frame, including an eight-spot in the sixth and four runs in the third.
Joining Budnar and Chodkowski with multi-hit showings in the nightcap were Maslo (2-4, two runs, two RBI) and
Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) (3-3, double, two runs, RBI).
Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) drove in three to tie Chodkowski for the team high, while Maslo, Budnar,
Ben Kosbie (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and
Jonathan Sharp (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) all had two RBIs.
Morgano's shutout improved him to 3-2 on the year, while his 10 strikeouts matched a career high. In total, he scattered four hits and walked just one. After today's doubleheader, Deasy (39) and Morgano (36) rank first and second, respectively, in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) in strikeouts.
With Sunday's game at Penn State Behrend already postponed due to the weekend's forecast, the Gators will return to action when they travel to Wabash for the final time to open up NCAC play with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 2.
