Gators fall in pair of close Florida battles

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Allegheny softball team continued competition at the Spring Games in Florida Monday (March 21).

The Gators fell in a pair of close contests, dropping games to Carleton, 4-2, and to Hamline, 2-1.

GAME ONE – Carleton 4, Allegheny 2
The Gators struck first in the second. Joplin Osgood (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) reached on an error with one out. After Isabelle Wakefield (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) was hit by a pitch and Halle Book (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) earned a walk, Jordan Williams (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Osgood. Starting pitcher Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) followed up with an RBI single through the left side to make it 2-0.

However, the Knights plated three runs in the third and an additional one in the fourth, which proved to be the final run of the game.

Osgood and Belardinelli provided the hits for the Gators in the game. In the circle, Belardinelli struck out seven.

GAME TWO – Hamline 2, Allegheny 1
The Pipers' runs came in the first and fifth innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Osgood hit a one-out blast over the centerfield wall to cut the lead down to one run.

Osgood led the Gators with three hits including a double in addition to the home run. Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic), Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) and Belardinelli registered hits as well.

Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) struck out 10 batters while allowing just one earned run in the complete game.

After a day off, the Gators return to action Wednesday (March 23) when they face MIT and Benedictine. Game one of the twinbill starts at 9:15 am.
