All-around performance gives Gators twinbill vs Waynesburg

By Adam Cohen, Athletic Communications Assistant

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny baseball team outscored Waynesburg by an 18-3 count over the two games to earn a doubleheader sweep against the future Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe at Robertson Field.

Allegheny took game one 10-1 and opened the scoring with two runs in the second. After a Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) single and Brayden Cartwright (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) was hit by a pitch, the two orchestrated a double steal — which was Cartwright's first swipe in his Allegheny career. Jake Stotsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) then drove in the series' first run with an RBI knock and Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley), in his first collegiate start, brought in Cartwright with a groundout.

The Gators tacked on one more in the third to make it 3-0 as Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) crushed his second homer of the season — the first one at Robertson Baseball Field in 2022. Allegheny padded the lead with a four-run fourth inning propelled by Byrant-Dawson's second RBI, along with Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Ben Kosbie (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) knocking in three runs on back-to-back doubles. Two innings later, the Blue and Gold picked up three more runs in the sixth highlighted by a Patrick Page (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) pinch-hit two-run double.

Meanwhile, Conor Deasy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) tossed five shutout innings, allowing four hits, one walk, and striking out four batters. He was followed up by Preston Pierce's (Camano Island, Wash./Stanwood) season debut where he fired two innings of one-run ball.

In the nightcap, Allegheny won 8-2 and had at least one run in each of the first five innings. The Gators got on the board in the first as Bryant-Dawson and Heckert delivered back-to-back run-producing singles. Although Waynesburg retaliated with two runs in the top of the second, Allegheny responded in the bottom of the frame. Cartwright scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, and Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) made it 4-2 after scoring on a dropped pop fly.

Anthony Maslo (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) then drove in Cartwright on a single in the third, while Kosbie added an RBI two-bagger in the fourth. The Gators collected two more runs in the fifth, capped by Bryant-Dawson's fourth RBI of the doubleheader.

As for the pitching, Daniel Morgano (Allison Park, Pa./Vincentian Academy) went five innings, allowing two hits, two runs (one earned), offering no free passes, and racking up nine strikeouts. Turner Bubeck (Katy, Texas/Katy Taylor) and Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) then combined for two scoreless frames to seal the twinbill sweep.

Overall, Bryant-Dawson paced the Gators with six hits, three stolen bases, and four runs scored on the day. Allegheny also had multi-hit games from Maslo, Kosbie, Dougherty, Cartwright, and Heckert. Additionally, the Blue and Gold went a perfect 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts.

Allegheny is scheduled to take on Baldwin Wallace at Robertson Baseball Field on Wednesday, March 23 at 4 p.m. in a single nine-inning game.
