Allegheny pitching twirls one-hitter for series sweep

By Adam Cohen, Athletic Communications Assistant

BECKLEY, W. Va. -- The Allegheny baseball team won its fourth consecutive game and completed the three-game series with a 4-0 victory over Alfred State. The victory improves the Gators record to 4-2 on the season.

Bobby Kusinsky (Harrison, Pa./Penn-Trafford) fired six scoreless innings, allowing one base hit, walking four, and striking out eight batters. Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield), Walker Cunningham (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs), and Mark Schweickert (Glen Allen, Va./John Randloph Tucker) delivered three hitless innings to finish the game. Overall, Allegheny collected 12 punchouts from its staff today.

A scoreless matchup was erased by a three-run fourth inning from the Gators. Back-to-back one out walks from Jonathan Sharp (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) got the ball rolling for Allegheny, with the latter working an 11-pitch at bat to reach base. After a double steal, Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brothers Rice) opened the scoring with an RBI groundout. The Gators piled on two more runs as William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) and Brayden Cartwright (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) pieced together a triple and double, respectively, to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

Allegheny tacked on one more the following inning as Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) notched the team's eighth triple of the series and was driven in by Jake Stotsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) for the fourth run for the Blue and Gold. Meanwhile, Heckert ended the afternoon with a homer shy of the cycle and Cartwright reached base in all three plate appearances.

The Gators will look to extend the winning streak at Grove City on Wednesday, March 9. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
