Gators hold off Penn State Shenango for nonconference win

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team picked up a win in its final nonconference game of the season, besting Penn State Shenango 65-61 on Saturday (Feb. 12) in Meadville.

After Penn State Shenango scored the first four points, the Gators scored the ensuing five points. The rest of the quarter went back-and-forth as a late basket gave the Lions a 12-8 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Breanna Warner (Hopewell, Pa./Sewickley Academy) gave the Gators the lead back in the second quarter at 22-21. In the period, the Gators outscored the Lions 20-11 to take a 28-23 lead into the locker room.

Chloe Rabold (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) hit four three-pointers in the third quarter as the Gators maintained a five point lead, 45-40, heading into the final frame.

Shenango mounted a comeback late in the fourth, bringing the Allegheny lead down to just one, 62-61, with just over a minute to go. However, an Alexis Caldwell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) jumper and a Warner free-throw sealed the game for the Gators.

Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) posted her second double-double of her rookie campaign, scoring a game-high 19 points and pulling in 10 rebounds. Rabold knocked down five triples in total, scoring 15 points on the day. Caldwell pulled down a game-best 15 rebounds and led the Gators with five assists. It marked the seventh time this season that Caldwell reached double digits in rebounds. Overall, each Gator that saw playing time tallied a spot in the scoring column.

Allegheny will head into the final week of the regular season with three home North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) games remaining, beginning with a Sunday matinee against Wittenberg tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m.
