Gambier, Ohio -- The Allegheny men's basketball team defeated Kenyon 85-80 in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) match on Saturday (Jan. 22). With the victory, the Gators improved to 6-7, 4-3 NCAC.
Originally trailing 13-0, Allegheny erased the deficit after pulling ahead 30-29 thanks to
Jordan Greynolds (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) and
Luke Barker (New Castle, Pa./Struthers (Ohio)) who during that stretch scored eight and seven points, respectively. Additionally,
Caden Hinckley (Boise, Idaho/Mount Lebanon (Pa.)) provided four defensive rebounds and a block to complete the comeback.
However, in the 18
th minute of the half, Kenyon retook the lead 41-40. After a Brian Roberts Jr. (Copley, Ohio/Copley) three-pointer and a Kenyon layup, Greynolds made his way to the charity strip and drained both free throw attempts to put Allegheny up 45-43. Roberts, Jr. then went downtown and drilled two foul shots to close out the half with the Gators out in front 50-46.
In the next frame, Allegheny created some distance from Kenyon and jumped out to a 74-62 lead. Nevertheless, Kenyon trimmed down the deficit to three points and trailed 80-77.
Yet, Greynolds gave the Gators some insurance with a dagger behind the arc to make it 83-77. Although Kenyon responded with a triple of their own, Roberts, Jr. neutralized the threat by stepping up to the foul line for his 29
th and 30
th points of the game; he ended the match with a perfect 10-for-10 at the line.
Besides Roberts, Jr., three other players finished the evening in double digits as Greynolds, Hinckley, and Barker had 20, 11 and 10 points, respectively. Hinckley also compiled a double-double consisting of four offensive and 10 defensive rebounds, while adding in two blocks.
After defeating Kenyon in both regular season contests, Allegheny will try to win the season series at Hiram on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m.
