MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny women's soccer team earned its first win on the home Blue Turf of the 2021 campaign when it defeated SUNY Fredonia, 2-1, in soggy nonconference action on Tuesday (Sept. 21).
The victory marked the second in the last three matches for the Gators, who handed the Blue Devils their second straight defeat to drop the visitors to 5-2-1.
Abby Waryanka (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) got the Gators on the board in the 22nd minute when she notched her first career goal, rushing in to head in a corner kick off the foot of
Natasha Rosa (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing). The header deflected off the keeper before finishing just inside the right post.
The 1-0 lead held up through halftime, but
Taylor McKindley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) cleaned up a failed clear attempt by the Blue Devils just inside the 18-yard box and buried her first collegiate goal to the upper-left corner of the cage. In the 75th minute Fredonia cut the lead in half, but the Gators closed out the match without allowing the equalizer and held on for the victory.
Gabby Culotta (Willoughby, Ohio/Andrews Osborne Academy) picked up the win in net, making five saves, including one in the final two minutes to preserve the lead.
Allegheny opens up North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play on Saturday, Sept. 25 when it travels to Gambier, Ohio for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
