Volleyball winning streak moves to nine with pair of victories

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The streak is up to nine as the Allegheny volleyball team earned another two victories to close out the annual Allegheny Gator Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 18).

The Gators swept La Roche (25-17, 25-18, 25-23) in their opening match, before defeating Mount Aloysius (25-17, 25-22, 25-15) in their final game of the weekend. The victories move Allegheny to 10-2 on the season.

Against La Roche, Emma Chambers (Stoutsville, Ohio/Amanda Cleercreak) had a team-high eight kills. Cheyenne Wilson (Chico, Calif./Pleasant Valley) tallied seven kills, while India McCruter (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Kendall Crum (Chatannooga, Tenn./Girls Preparatory) had five kills each. As a team, the Gators totaled seven aces, led by four by Taylor Besch (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection). Meagan Robare (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) and Olivia D'Andrea (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) combined for 31 assists, 16 and 15 respectively.

In addition to her team-lead in aces, Besch also led the Gators with 21 digs. Wilson and Robare were also in double-digits with 11 apiece. The defensive front for the Allegheny totaled seven blocks.

In the Mount Aloysius match, Chambers again reached double digits in kills with 10 to lead all players. Wilson was close behind at eight kills. D'Andrea (14; 4) and Robare (10; 3) combined to hand out 24 helpers and post seven service aces.

Against the Mounties, Besch tallied 17 digs, while Kate Christie (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) was also in double figures with 14. McCruter turned away a game-best five blocks, with Wilson adding three.

The Gators will open up their first season of North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) competition with a 1 p.m. match at Wittenberg on Saturday, Sept. 25.
