MEADVILLE, Pa. -- A pair of close games went against the Gators as Allegheny dropped both ends of a nonconference doubleheader against Denison at the Robertson Athletic Complex, 4-2 and 5-4.
With the losses, the Allegheny baseball team concludes the 2021 campaign with a 15-12 overall record, after a 7-5 showing in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). The 15-12 record marks the eighth winning season in the last nine years for the program. The season is concluded after tomorrow's (Sunday, May 9) doubleheader at Denison (which was ranked third in the first NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Rankings of the season) has been canceled due to the inclement weather forecast.
In the second game, the Gators fell behind by a 5-0 count thanks to a pair of homers by the Big Red and two more runs in the top of the sixth. Allegheny, however, got back into the game in the bottom of the sixth with four runs. With one out,
Dalton DuBois (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) singled and
Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) walked, setting the table for a two-run triple by
Jake Stotsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy), who would then come in to score on an RBI groundout by
Tyler Hettich (Sarver, Pa./Freeport). Three straight singles by
Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West),
Brayden Cartwright (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) and
Roman Santia (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) brought home the fourth run and chased Denison's starter, but the reliever was able to come in and get a strikeout to end the frame.
Starter
Daniel Morgano (Allison Park, Pa./Vincentian Academy) suffered his first loss of the season (3-1) in the nightcap, working 5.1 innings and giving up all five runs, just two of which were earned. The sophomore righty gave up just four hits and walked four while striking out six.
Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) worked the final 1.2 innings of one-hit relief, needing just 14 pitches to get five outs.
DuBois and Cartwright both had multi-hit games, while Stotsky drove in a pair and Heckert walked twice in game two.
Chodkowski drove in both Gator runs in the opener, recording an RBI single in the second that tied the game at 1-1, and an RBI double in the sixth that set the final margin at 4-2.
Heckert and
Jacob Budnar (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) joined Chodkowski with multi-hit showings in the first game.
Conor Deasy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) was dealt the loss (3-2), going the distance and allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned), while striking out three and walking two.
