CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Four members of the Allegheny baseball team earned spots on the All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) East Team for their performances on the diamond this spring.
A pair of seniors and two underclassmen earned the recognition. Seniors
Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and
Tyler Hettich (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) collected the honors at third base and designated hitter, respectively, while being joined by sophomore pitcher
Conor Deasy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) and freshman outfielder
Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny).Â
Chutko was among the top offensive threats in the NCAC all season long, slashing .359/.422/.522 over all 27 games, with 33 hits (including 10 doubles, a triple and a home run), 16 runs, 14 RBI and 12 stolen bases. His 12 stolen bases placed him fifth in the conference, while his 10 doubles were sixth and his .359 average was 11th. In conference-only competition, the senior led all players with a staggering .512 batting average, while ranking second with a .543 on-base percentage, fourth with 22 hits and fifth with six doubles and a .698 slugging percentage. Chutko also led Allegheny with 10 multi-hit games, including seven with two hits, two with three hits and one four-hit showing and finished the season as one of the toughest players in all of NCAA Division III to strikeout, going down on strikes just twice in more than 100 plate appearances.
Hettich started 24 of the 25 games he appeared in this season, finishing fourth on the team with a .313 batting average and third with a .478 slugging percentage. The senior belted a pair of homers to finish tied for second on the team in that category, as were his 14 RBI. In total, Hettich tallied 21 hits (third for the Gators), five doubles (third), five HBP (first) and nine runs scored.
Deasy put together a terrific campaign, registering a 3-2 record in five starts, with a 3.34 ERA, four complete games and two shutouts in 32.1 innings. He also posted a 26:10 strikeout-to-walk ratio, 1.02 WHIP and .195 opponents' batting average. His 3.34 overall ERA was third in the NCAC, while his four complete games topped the conference and ranks among the top 20 best in Division III. Among conference-only showings, Deasy's 3-0 record and three wins led the league, and his 1.89 ERA in NCAC competition was best in the conference by more than a full run.
Dougherty rounded out the Gators' selections, starting 22 of the 24 games he appeared in as a rookie. The newcomer finished with a .281 batting average and drove in 12 runs and scored 12. Of his 18 total hits, six went for extra bases, including three doubles and two homers, while he finished 4-of-6 on stolen bases.
All four All-NCAC honorees earned major awards as voted on by their coaches and teammates following the season, as Chutko took home the "Bob Garbark MVP" award, Deasy secured the "Petey-Brudz Pitcher of the Year" honor, Dougherty claimed the "Joe Killian Newcomer of the Year" accolade and Hettich was bestowed the "Mike Porada Team-First" award.Â
The Gators finished 2021 with a 15-12 overall record, the program's eighth winning season of the last nine.Â
