Allegheny sweeps No. 25 Wooster in Sunday DH

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Fueled by strong pitching in game one and an offensive outburst in game two, the Allegheny baseball team earned its first doubleheader sweep over Wooster since 2016 as the Gators took down the No. 25 Fighting Scots by scores of 3-2 and 10-7 at the Robertson Baseball Field.

Daniel Morgano (Allison Park, Pa./Vincentian Academy) went the distance on the mound in game one, keeping the Gators in the game and dancing out of multiple jams. The sophomore struck out nine batters in 7.0 innings, surrendering five hits and four walks and yielding just two runs over 124 pitches. In the process, the sophomore righty moved to 3-0 on the year.

Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) led off the bottom of the seventh of a 2-2 game with a double off the fence in left field before Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) was called upon to pinch hit. Chodkowski placed a bunt to the third base side of the mound and raced to first, advancing Heckert to third. However, Chodkowski's speed forced an errant throw by the pitcher that allowed Heckert to score on the error following the infield single to walk off in the opener.

Heckert had the lone multi-hit game for the Gators in the opener, while Allegheny's first two runs came on a two-run homer by Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) in the bottom of the fourth. It was the first home run by the senior since his freshman season, April 2, 2018 against Hiram.

Game two started off in wild fashion. Wooster scored five runs in the top of the first inning, but Allegheny responded with four runs of its own in the bottom half.

A bases-loaded single by Tyler Hettich (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) brought home the Gators' first two runs of the night cap, before Jake Stotsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) and Seth Reisman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) added RBI base knocks of their own in the frame. Hettich contributed a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 5-5.

After Wooster regained the lead, 6-5, in the top of the third, Stotsky belted his first career home run to left field to put the Gators ahead for good, 7-6, in the bottom of the inning. Dalton DuBois (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) added an RBI single to plate Roman Santia (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) to extend the lead out to 8-6 before the inning was over. The Scots clawed back to 8-7 in the fourth, but Allegheny added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth to set the final margin.

Hettich and Stotsky tied for the team lead with three RBI apiece and were two of four Gators to have a pair of hits each, joined by DuBois and Heckert.

Garrett Senchur (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) earned his first collegiate win in relief of starter Nick Tarasi (Gibsonia, Pa./Shady Side Academy), entering with two on and two outs in the top of the fourth, with the tying run on third and go-ahead run on base and getting a strikeout to end the threat. Nolan Thompson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) worked 2.0-plus innings of hitless and scoreless relief, striking out two and walking two before exiting with the tying run at the plate and giving way to Preston Pierce (Camano Island, Wash./Stanwood), who shut the door on the final three outs for his first career save.

Allegheny is scheduled to close out North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) competition for the 2021 season with a doubleheader against Kenyon at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4 in Meadville.
