OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Allegheny baseball team remained undefeated in 2021 after securing a doubleheader sweep at Oberlin, picking up a 14-5 win in game one before earning a 9-6 extra-inning win in the nightcap.
In game one, Allegheny got on the board first in the second inning when
Ben Kosbie (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) hit a sacrifice fly to right center that brought home
Isaiah Lucas (Butler, Pa./Butler), giving the Gators a 1-0 advantage. Later in the same inning,
Tyler Hettich doubled the lead with a single through the right side that scored
Jacob Budnar (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) and increased the lead to 2-0.Â
A six-run fourth inning helped secure Allegheny's win in game one. The inning was highlighted by a
Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) three-run home run down the left-field line, increasing the lead to 8-2.Â
Oberlin added three runs of its own between the bottom of the fourth and bottom of the fifth innings, however, an 8-5 deficit was as close to the lead as the Yeoman would get.Â
The Gators exploded for six more runs in the top of the sixth to add on some insurance for a game one win.Â
Kosbie tallied a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Hettich notched two hits and tied Heckert for a team-best three RBIs.
In his first pitching appearance in a Gator uniform,
Hunter Lohr (Bowdoinham, Maine/Mt. Arat) earned his first career win. Lohr recorded four strikeouts through 4.1 innings of work. Â
In game two, the Gators established a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as
Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored first on a passed ball. Heckert would score on a wild pitch and Lucas scored on a
Jake Stotsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) sacrifice fly to right field.Â
Allegheny recorded another three-run inning in the top of the third to push the lead up to 6-1. Oberlin, however, recorded five unanswered runs to extend game two into extra innings.Â
The Gators capitalized on a Yeoman error in the top of the eighth that scored two runs to put the lead back in Allegheny's favor. Lucas provided another run of insurance, bringing home Dougherty by virtue of a sacrifice fly to center field.
Heckert and Stotsky paced Allegheny's offense in game two as both had 2-for-3 days at the plate and each drove in a run.Â
Nick Tarasi (Gibsonia, Pa./Shady Side Academy) shut the door in the bottom of the eighth for his first save of the 2021 campaign.
Wyatt Wright (Guys Mills, Pa./Maplewood) earned his first career win in the night cap. In one inning of work, Wright gave up one hit, did not concede a run and struck out two batters.   Â
The Gators return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 7, when they host Wooster in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The game will serve as both the Gators' North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) and home opener.
