MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The inaugural home game in Allegheny men's lacrosse history needed an extra period to be decided, but it was Wooster who claimed the final tally as the Gators fell to the Fighting Scots in overtime, 11-10.
The game was tied at 10-10 for the back half of the fourth quarter, but both teams had opportunities to take the lead before the period ended. Allegheny goalie
Eric Mirkovich (York, Pa./York Central) turned away the first shot on goal he faced in overtime, but the rebound deflected right into the stick of a waiting Scot and was put away for the game-winner after 51 seconds of overtime.
The game was even at 8-8 through three periods and the two squads traded tallies in the fourth.
Nick Jordan (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) gave Allegheny a 9-8 lead just under three minutes into the quarter, but Wooster responded right away by winning the ensuing faceoff and taking it straight down to score.
Patrick Hogan (London, Ontario/St. Andre Bessett) put the Gators back in the lead at 10-9 with his third goal of the afternoon at the 8:32-mark of the period, but the Scots went on to set the 10-10 tie and date with overtime just over one minute later.
A three goal spurt to start the second half gave Allegheny its first lead of the game at 8-7 after trailing, 7-5, through 30 minutes.
Zackery Devers (Kapolei, Hawaii/Kapolei) made it 7-6 two minutes into the half before
David Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) tied the game at 7-7 (10:28) and
Mack Nevin (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores) gave the Gators the lead with 5:59 to go in the third quarter.
Wooster opened up a 5-1 lead through one quarter of play. The Scots struck first at 11:52 before
Aidan D'Amato (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) buried the first goal in a home game in program history 45 seconds later. The Gators went on to score the first three goals of the second quarter, with Hogan playing a role in all three, setting up
Benjamin Gallegos (Lafayette, Colo./Dawson School) for the first and then scoring a pair himself.
Hogan's hat trick and five total points were both game highs and marked the fifth time in six career games that the sophomore has posted a hat trick. Kraus led the Gators with eight shots (five on goal) was second with two goals and three points. Devers and
Aidan D'Amato both had a goal and an assist.
Dillon D'Amato (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) paced the defensive effort with five caused turnovers, while
Ryan Mantione (East Northport, N.Y./John Glenn) forced a pair of turnovers.
Pete Schellbach (New York, N.Y./Salisbury School) collected a team-high four ground balls, while the foursome of Jordan, Hogan, Mantione and
River Shields (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) each scooped up three GBs.
Mirkovich suffered the loss to fall to 0-1, but not without posting a strong effort with 13 saves and a .542 save percentage.Â
As a team, the Gators cleared the ball well with 24-of-26 opportunities proving successful.
Allegheny returns to the field on Wednesday, April 14 when it hosts Hiram in another North Coast Athletic Conference contest at Frank B. Fuhrer Field. Opening faceoff is slated for 7 p.m.
