MEADVILLE, Pa. -- A late dominating fourth quarter nearly brought the Gators all the way back from a double-digit deficit, but Allegheny eventually dropped a close, 70-67, nonconference decision vs Geneva at Mullen Arena.
After Geneva extended the lead to 63-41 early in the fourth, the Gators stormed back, scoring the ensuing 20 points to pull within four, 63-61, with just over three minutes to play. The run concluded after Caldwell knocked down a pair of free throws to put Allegheny within the two points.
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) scored seven points during the run, while
Branygan Bianchin (Wexford, Pa./North Catholic) chipped in six and
Alexis Caldwell (Whitefish Bay, Wisc./Whitefish Bay) added five. Allegheny would get within one, 68-67, on a Caldwell layup with under a minute left, but the final points in the game were scored at the free-throw line by the Golden Tornadoes.
Allegheny outscored Geneva 18-16 in the third quarter, with
Jenna Lutz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scoring seven of those points.Â
After a back-and-forth-seven minutes to begin the game, the Gators gained a 14-10 edge off of consecutive baskets by Caldwell and
Chloe Rabold (Baden, Pa./Ambridge). However, the Golden Tornados ended the quarter on a 10-0 spurt to gain the lead, 20-14. Geneva rode that momentum through the second quarter as they outscored Allegheny 23-9 to own a 43-22 halftime lead.
Caldwell led all players with 19 points and 17 points, both career highs, and the junior's third career double-double. Lauer joined Caldwell in double figures with 15 points, adding seven rebounds of her own. Bianchin posted six points and nine boards, with
Jenna Manke (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) pulling down eight rebounds.
The Gators host Franciscan at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20 to conclude the current four-game homestand.
