Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

8,006 Days: Allegheny snaps 48-game skid at No. 17 Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio -- The location and result were the same -- an Allegheny win at Timken Gymnasium. The time between the two events, however, spanned 8,006 days from Feb. 28, 1998 until Jan. 29, 2020 when Allegheny defeated No. 17 Wooster, 89-84, to snap a 48-game losing streak against the Fighting Scots.

The last time the Gators defeated the Fighting Scots was the 1998 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship Game when the Blue & Gold won a 66-64 decision in Ohio. The 2020 victory improved Allegheny to 11-7 overall and 5-6 in league play. Wooster falls to 14-4 this season and 8-3 in the NCAC.

All-America candidate Jordan Rawls (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) scored a game-high 27 points -- and became just the second Allegheny men's basketball player to go over 1,600 points in his career. Against Wooster, Rawls connected on 10-of-20 shots from the field and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line. In addition to his scoring prowess, the senior pulled down nine boards, the 11th time in 18 games this year he's snagged at least nine caroms.

Jordan Greynolds (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) had a career-high 24 points, playing just 24 miles from his high school. The sophomore hit 8-of-16 from the field, including four three-pointers and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe. He also corralled seven rebounds.

Off the bench, Brian Roberts, Jr. (Copley, Ohio/Copley) pitched in 16 points, while Keeno Holmes (Pittsburgh, Pa./Lincoln Park) joined the trio in double figures at 10 points.

As a team, Allegheny made 22-of-25 free throws, 88 percent, tied for the most made free throws this year and the second-best free-throw percentage (88.2 vs. Thiel). After shooting 60 percent (18-of-30) from the field in the first half, the Gators finished the evening at 52.6 percent (30-of-57).

With a four-point lead (33-29) and four minutes remaining in the first half, the Gators invoked an 11-0 run before allowing a triple before the break to take a 12-point lead into halftime at 44-32. In the second half, the lead would swell as large as 18 (57-39) at 16:12. Wooster battled back to take a two-point lead, 78-76, by the 4:46 mark, but the Gators were able to respond with a 13-6 advantage down the stretch to secure the streak-ending victory.

Allegheny's schedule does not get any easier as it will welcome No. 6 Wittenberg at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1. At halftime, the Gators will recognize a decade of excellence as members of the 1979-89 teams will be honored. That era, led by Hall of Fame coach John Reynders '75, won six conference championships in a 10-year span.
