Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer begins 2019 season against Keystone

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Allegheny men's soccer team fell to Keystone 3-1 in the 2019 regular season opener.

After 75 minutes of scoreless play, Allegheny tallied the first goal of the game as senior midfielder Eddie Opalko (Springdale, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) found the back off the net with a header off a double assist from Nicholas Taliani (Chewick, Pa./Springdale) and Zachary Ioli (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair). Opalko's header was only the fifth shot by Allegheny in the contest at the time.

The Giants responded with a goal less than one minute later when Jaylen Walters connected on a corner from Sebastian Bonilla to even the score at one apiece.

Danny Reid (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) looked to give Allegheny the lead once again in the 83rd minute, as he worked around two defenders and ripped a shot towards the top of the goal, but the crossbar kept it out.

Keystone quickly answered with a goal of its own when Ibrahim Tounkara fielded a long pass in the offensive zone, worked around the keeper, and scored. Another goal in the 86th minute by Andrew Lupinacci produced the final result of 3-1.

Jorge Olan (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Kristian Snyder (Medina, N.Y./Medina) led the team with two shots each, followed by Reid, Opalko, and Jordan Wilson (Durham, N.C./Riverside) with one.

"For the first seventy-five minutes, we played hard. Coming into this game against a team that made the NCAA tournament last year, we showed a lot of good things for the first three quarters of the game.."

Coach Panzetta then discussed his thoughts on the final quarter of the match.

"After the equalizing goal, we have to be better on the restart. Our heads were down, it was a hot day. The score was 1-1, it was still anybody's game."

The Gators are back in action tomorrow at 1:00 P.M. as they face-off against Virginia Wesleyan in a non-conference matchup.
