Carone paces potent Gator offense in 18-2 win over Behrend

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Gators scored 11 runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings to take down Penn State Behrend, 18-2, in nonconference action at the Robertson Athletic Complex.

The Allegheny baseball team improves to 9-7 overall, having won nine of their last 11 games. The Gators' sixth-straight win over the Lions drops Penn State Behrend drops to 11-6 on the year.

Vincent Carone (Erie, Pa./McDowell) had a career day, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) had a three-hit showing in going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Keegan Phillips (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) gave the Gators three players with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. Francis Faiello (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Kiski School) added a two-run triple off the bench.

Joe Nagel (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) earned the win in the pre-determined bullpen day, working the first 4.0 innings to improve to 3-1. The senior gave up four hits and both runs with two strikeouts. His bullpen held the Lions off the board and gave up just two hits. Nolan Thompson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) struck out three and gave up two hits in 2.0 innings, while Nick Tarasi (Gibsonia, Pa./Shady Side Academy), Wyatt Wright (Guys Mills, Pa./Maplewood) and Cam Karnik (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) each worked an inning of hitless baseball.

The Gators will return to North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play with a doubleheader against Oberlin on Wednesday, April 3. First pitch of game one at the Robertson Baseball Field is set for 12 p.m.
