LA VERNE, Calif. -- The Allegheny men's golf team improved one spot on the final day to finish ninth in the 16-team West Cup hosted by La Verne at Sierra La Verne Country Club in Southern California.

The Gators finished with a 54-hole score of 930 to edge California Lutheran for ninth by one stroke. After a 305 first round and 317 second round, Allegheny sat in 10th position after the 36-hole first day. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took home the team title with an 874 to best Redlands by nine strokes. Individual medalist honors in the 83-golfer field went to CMS's Ken Kong, who shot a -1 213 (75-68-69).

Tyler Pham (Pembroke Pines, Fla./The Sagemont School) and Alex Lawson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) led the way for the Gators with identical scores of 228 with Pham posting a +1 72 on the final 18 holes to finish 76-80-72 for the tournament and Lawson shooting 72-76-80. That was good for a tie in 22nd place for the Gator pair. Pham recorded four birdies on the first 36 holes and then equaled that amount on the final 18. In round one, Lawson carded par eight times and recorded five birdies and finished even on the back nine after going plus-1 on the front. He had one birdie on Tuesday.

Ryan Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) finished third for the Blue & Gold at 240, good for 55th. After a pair of birdies on Monday (81-80), Dayton carded under par twice on Tuesday for a 79. After recording an albatross (double eagle) on the 497-yard, par-5 13th hole when he scored a two, Matthew Del Rosso (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) came in fourth on the team and 59th overall. On day one, went driver and 153-yard sand wedge to card his deuce en route to a 76-81. His 84 on Tuesday left him one stroke behind Dayton at 241.

Jack O'Leary (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) rounded out the Allegheny lineup in 65th with a 243. After a pair of birdies on Monday put him at 166 (84-82) through 36 holes, he made three birdies in the final round to score 77.

Allegheny will compete in another prestigious cup event when it travels to Hershey, Pa. for The Hershey Cup at Hershey Country Club on Sunday-Monday, April 7-8.
