HOUGHTON, N.Y.—The Allegheny College women's tennis team started their 2019 spring schedule with an 8-1 win over Houghton College on the road Saturday (Feb. 9).
Amanda Ress Liere and
Miharu Koh kicked off the match with a clean 8-0 sweep over Tori Noller and Amanda Carl.
After dropping the second doubles match, the Gators bounced back with a win at third doubles.
Candace Burkhammer and
Liz Evans fired on all cylinders as they defeated Tessa Brown and Maddi Soth 8-1.
After taking a 2-1 lead after doubles, the Gators swept the singles matches.
Ress Liere was first off the court as she swept Noller at first singles, 6-0, 6-0. Koh Followed up with a 6-1, 6-2 win at second singles against Carl.
Savannah Gray won the clinching match at third singles, besting Alicia Cline 6-1, 6-0.
Burkhammer collected a 7-5, 6-3 fifth singles win against Brown, while
Satori Chin defeated Soth 6-0, 6-1 at sixth singles.
Hannah Schaffer had the closest match of the singles flight in the fourth spot against Catie Moore. After falling by a close 7-6 score in the opening set, Schaffer was able to break Moore in the second, 6-4, to force a super tiebreaker. Moore had a chance to clinch the match up 9-7 in the tiebreaker, but Schaffer rallied. After staving off two straight match points to tie it at nine, she continued to roll, winning the ensuing two points to take it by a score of 11-9.
The Gators are back in action Saturday (Feb. 16) as they travel to Cleveland to face Division-II Notre Dame College.
