ERIE, Pa.—The Allegheny College men's tennis team suffered their first setback of the year as they fell to Division-II Mercyhurst University 8-1 at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie on Friday (Feb. 22).
The Lakers swept the double flights to take a 3-0 lead into singles. After a win at second singles, Mercyhurst wrapped up the win with a fourth singles victory.
Zach Anderson picked up the Gator point in the sixth singles flight against Arsenly Sklyarov. After dropping the first set in straight games, Anderson fought back. A break in the second set gave him a 7-5 win, forcing a third set super tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was close like the second set, but once again Anderson was able to gain a small advantage and ride it to a 10-8 score, securing him the win.
The Gators have a quick turnaround, as they are back in action Saturday (Feb. 23) against John Carroll University in Cleveland.
