MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny men's basketball team pulled away late in the second half as it wrapped up the nonconference portion of the 2019-20 season with an 82-68 win over Thiel at Mullen Arena.
Sophomore
Caden Hinckley (Boise, Idaho/Mount Lebanon (Pa.)) finished one assist shy of a triple-double with 16 points (7-of-14), 15 rebounds, and nine assists. It marked his second consecutive double-double and the seventh of his collegiate tenure. He also blocked five shots, a new career-high.
Jordan Rawls (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Alderdice) posted his 17th career double-double (third of the season) by scoring a game-high 24 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. He also added three assists, three steals and three blocks. As a team, Allegheny turned away 10 shots, tied for 18th-most in a Division III game thus far this season.
For the second-straight game,
Brian Roberts, Jr. (Copley, Ohio/Copley) extended his season-high, putting up 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while also pulling down six boards in 22 minutes.
Keeno Holmes (Pittsburgh, Pa./Lincoln Park) was the fourth Gator in double-digits at 14 points, plus four assists and a game-high four steals.
Brendon Urso (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) was perfect from the field (3-for-3), highlighted by a pair of triples.
Thiel led at the midway point of the second half, but a pair of free throws from Rawls knotted the game at 58-58. By the 6:20-mark, Allegheny trailed by one, 63-62, but embarked on a 15-0 run over the next four minutes to open up a 77-63 lead at 2:20 to go. The run was bookended by Hinckley layups (he had six points during the spurt) and featured four points from Rawls, a triple by Holmes and a pair of free throws from Roberts, Jr.
For the game, the Gators shot their highest percentage of the year from the floor, capitalizing on 52.5 percent (31-for-59) of their field-goal attempts. Their 88.2 percent (15-of-17) mark at the charity stripe also is tops on the year, led by an 8-for-9 showing by Rawls and 5-of-6 by Roberts, Jr.
With the victory, Allegheny moves to 6-3 overall on the season behind a 6-1 nonconference record this year. That regular season nonconference mark is the best for the Blue & Gold since the 1997-98 team went 7-1 in non-league games during the regular season.
The Gators will return to the court and North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play when they host Ohio Wesleyan at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19 in the final game of the 2019 calendar year.
