Roberts, Jr., Rawls top 20 points in loss to Hiram

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's basketball team fell, 84-76, in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play Wednesday (Jan. 9).

The Terriers jumped out to an early 15-8 lead, but the Gators rattled off seven straight points, including a three by Billy Urso to tie the game with 11:30 to play in the opening set. Following a timeout, the Terriers took a 21-15 lead. Once again, the Gators had an answer for the Terrier run, scoring seven straight and taking the lead on a Brian Roberts, Jr. basket.

The game remained close until Hiram went on an 8-0 run to gain a 35-26 lead with under five minutes to play in the half. Down the stretch, the Terrier lead grew to 12 as they took a 44-32 lead into the half.

The Gators were able to drop the Hiram lead to nine early in the second half, but Hiram recovered and gain a 20-point advantage minutes later. The lead would grow to 23 before the Gators brought it down to 15 multiple times.

The Terriers maintained their advantage throughout the half, but with just over five minutes to play, the Gators made a push, scoring six straight points. A Roberts, Jr. midrange jumper brought the lead down to 14, forcing the Terriers to call a timeout.

In the final five minutes, the Gators were unable to bring the Hiram lead below 12 multiple times, but the Terriers were able to answer on the opposite end. A Josh Ratesic three with under 30 seconds to play dropped the lead to single digits, 83-74. A late Jordan Rawls dunk brought the lead to eight, but the Gators ultimately fell, 84-76.

Roberts, Jr. poured in a season-high 25 points on 9-of-17 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line. He also handed five assists, five rebounds and four steals. Rawls had an identical 9-of-17 shooting night, going for 22 points (matching a season-high) and 13 rebounds, his 11th career double-double and second-straight game with 22 and 13.

Zach Ecker was third on the team with nine points and Caden Hinckley established a new season best with nine rebounds.

The Gators are back in action Saturday (Jan. 12) at home against Denison.
