Women's Basketball begins 2019 with loss to #21 DePauw

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Gators led after one quarter, but #21 DePauw surged past Allegheny over the final three quarters as the AC women's basketball team opened up the 2019 calendar year with a 72-50 loss to the Tigers.

With the defeat, Allegheny drops to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action. The game was the first of three league duels in four days for the Gators, who will host Wittenberg at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3, and travel to Kenyon at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4.

The Gators led by as many as eight points, 13-5, with 3:56 remaining in the opening period to force a DePauw time out after a layup by Delaney Arbore. In the first quarter, Julianna Skowron scored six points and Rylee Donovan netted five points as the home team led by an 18-15 count after 10 minutes.

A 19-7 advantage in the second quarter, however, by the Tigers allowed the visitors to lead, 34-25, at halftime. Despite outscoring DePauw, 20-19, in the fourth period, the Gators were unable to overcome the deficit in the second half.

Donovan led all players with 20 points, her third game this season reaching 20 points. The sophomore added six rebounds and four assists. Skowron reached double figures for the ninth time in 2018-19 with 15 points, and narrowly missed her fifth double-double of the season by adding nine rebounds. She also turned away a career-best three blocks.
