MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Gators had the ball down a point with a chance to win the game, but an offensive foul on a drive to the hoop saw the game end with Allegheny falling to Ohio Wesleyan, 66-65, in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action from the David V. Wise Center.
The game was moved up from its original start time of 1 p.m. on Saturday due to the projected wintry conditions across the region.
The Gators trailed by 12, 59-47, with 1:08 to play in the third quarter. From that point, Allegheny used a 16-3 run that gave the home squad a 63-62 lead with 2:37 to play in the fourth quarter.
Delaney Arbore scored eight of the points during the spurt, including the final four, while the Gators also got buckets from
Zoe Soilis,
Kaylah Pinkney and
Julianna Skowron.
A Bishops layup at 1:57 gave the guests the lead back, but Pinkney answered just 17 seconds later to give the lead back to the home squad, 65-64. Unfortunately, it would be the last points for the Gators, as a pair of free throws by OWU's Devin Hefner with 48 seconds remaining proved to be the final points of the loss.
Skowron led all players with 20 points and 12 rebounds, her second-straight double-double and her sixth of the season and ninth of her career. The sophomore was an impressive 9-of-11 from the field and pulled down five offensive boards. Pinkney equaled her career high with 15 points, including going 3-of-6 from three-point range, while Arbore also added 15 points.
For the game, the Allegheny outscored OWU in the paint, 38-30, but the Bishops led in points off turnover, 21-11. OWU also made 25-of-29 free throws, while Allegheny was 8-of-13.
The Gators will host Wooster on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 5 p.m. Allegheny won the first meeting in Ohio, 79-69, on Dec. 5.
