BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Allegheny men's cross country team faced opponents from all three NCAA classifications at the annual Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University.
The Gators finished 22nd overall in a 45-team field, and fifth among Division III schools, on the 8-kilometer course.
For the third time in as many events this season, Allegheny was led by senior
Matt Svetz, who turned in a time of 25:28 to take 16th overall in a 364-runner field, and second among Division III runners. It marked a new personal record for Svetz at the 8K distance, 18 seconds better than his previous mark set at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship on Oct. 28 of last season.
Fellow senior
Louis McUmber was the Gators' number-two man, finishing 106th with a time of 26:42, the second-best 8K time of his career.
Rookie
Tim Weighart was a third Gator to finish in the top half of the field. Competing at the 8-kilometer distance for the first time in his collegiate career, Weighart posted a time of 27:15 to place 175th, just ahead of junior teammate Benjamin Slack-Foust, who was timed in 27:17.
Sophomore
Jared Szklenski was Allegheny's fifth man, running a time of 27:28, with juniors
Seth Conard (27:46) and
Alex Spiro (28:04) rounding out the Gator seven.
With four runners in the top-20, Queen's University won the team championship with a low score of 72 points to easily out-distance second-place Cornell (126). Binghamton's Dan Schaffer won the individual title with a time of 24:37.
After a week off, the Gators will return to action on Oct. 13, again making the trek east across Pennsylvania to take part in the Rowan Inter-Regional Border Battle in Glassboro, New Jersey.
