Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Jeremy Smith

Pair of Late Goals Lift Gators to Win Against Fredonia

MEADVILLE, Pa.  After 86 minutes of scoreless play, the Allegheny College women's soccer team scored two goals in a two minute span to pick up a 2-0 win against Fredonia State University at home Tuesday (Sept. 25).

The Gators earned the first scoring chance of the game in the 26th minute when a Hannah Smith cross found Taylor Renk for a header, but the Blue Devil goalkeeper stepped on front to keep the ball out of the net.

After Renk's shot, the Blue Devils recorded two shots on goal, but Maya Hackman had a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless at the half.

Fredonia had a shot to get on the board in the 57th minute, but their shot ricocheted off the crossbar.

Late in the half, the Gator offense came alive.  In the 88th minute, Shannon McGuinn snuck a pass through a pair of Blue Devil defenders to Renk.  Renk sped past the remaining defender to set-up a one-on-one with goalie.  Renk's shot from about seven-yards out got by the outstretched arms of the Blue Devil goalie to put the Gators on the board.

After the first goal, the Gators needed just over a minute to extend that lead to two.  After having an assist on the first goal, McGuinn scored from a short distance on an Isabella Martinez assist to push the lead 2-0 and secure the non-conference win.

McGuinn led the Gators with a goal and an assist while Renk had a goal, and Martinez an assist.

Hackman tallied her third shutout of the season, making four saves.

The Gators are back in action Friday (Sept. 28) when they host Grove City College at 6:00 p.m.
