GREENVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College volleyball team fell in non-conference action to Thiel College Tuesday (Sept. 18).
Thiel won the sets 25-17, 25-20 and 25-17.
The Tomcats got off to a quick start, amassing a 6-0 lead before the Gators called a timeout. That lead increased to 12-4 before a second timeout. Following the second timeout the Gators made a push, going on a 9-4 run to cut the gap to 16-13. However, that was the closest the Gators came as Thiel closed out the set with a 25-17 win.
The Gators grabbed a 4-1 lead in the second set. However, Thiel fought back and tied it at six. The teams traded points back-and-forth until Thiel gained a small 13-10 advantage. The Gators responded by rattling off five straight points to take a 15-13 lead. After trading points once more, the Tomcats scored five straight points to gain the advantage. The Gators cut the lead to 23-19 but the Tomcats outscored the Gators 2-1 at the end of the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Tomcats gained an early advantage in the third set, 5-1, but the Gators slowly chipped away and brought the set within two, 11-9. The game remained close until Thiel went on a 10-1 run to take a 22-11 lead. The Gators fought back late, cutting the lead to 23-16, but the Tomcats ultimately took the set 25-17 to clinch the match.
Grace Lenguaer led the Gators with 10 kills.
Alysha Crowther and
Rebecca MacQuarrie had five kills apiece while
Tamara Babic had four.
Olivia D'Andrea had 18 assists.
Rachel Slotterback led Allegheny with 18 digs. Lengauer added 15 to her 10 kills.
Taylor Besch had 12 while
Raelynn Dorscheid had 11.
Thiel was led by Jessica Kelley's 11 kills and Peyton Allen's 28 digs.
The Gators are back in action at home Saturday (Sept. 22) with a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) match against Kenyon College and a non-conference contest against Chatham.
